Aeam 841 has been running on 100% HVO since the beginning – consistently sustainable in diesel operation

During the testing and commissioning of the Aeam 841, LokPool AG is committed to more sustainable diesel operation: Our Aeam 841 has been running on 100% HVO100 since its first day on the rails, supplied by New Process AG. This is a modern, synthetic diesel fuel (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) that is made entirely from residual and waste materials.
While SBB has been using an HVO blend of 25% HVO and 75% fossil diesel throughout Switzerland since April 2024 to reduce CO2 emissions, LokPool AG has consciously decided to use 100% HVO100. Whether and how this can be implemented during ongoing operation remains to be seen. However, the course was deliberately set in the direction of HVO or alternative fuels during the development of the Aeam.
What is HVO100?
HVO belongs to the latest generation of paraffinic diesel fuels. It is not made from petroleum, but from renewable raw materials such as used vegetable oils and industrial residues. According to SBB, even a 25% HVO blend noticeably reduces CO₂ emissions. With pure HVO100, CO₂ savings of up to 85% are possible – depending on production and supplier.

Why is the Aeam 841 ideal for using HVO100?

- Cleaner combustion, less particulate formation
It was clear to LokPool AG: if diesel, then as climate-friendly as possible. The locomotive is currently undergoing testing and evaluation to comprehensively assess consumption data, operating behavior and component compatibility. The results so far have been consistently positive.
Müller Technologie AG Builds Innovative Tribrid Locomotive Aeam 841

Müller Technologie AG is developing and constructing the tribrid locomotive Aeam 841. Tribrid stands for the locomotive’s three different drive types: pantograph, battery, or diesel generator. With this project, the company is making an important contribution to achieving the Federal Government’s 2050 climate strategy. The Aeam 841 locomotive was developed by Müller Technologie AG primarily for use in shunting, construction site, and cargo service operations. As of today, 80% of journeys can be carried out via pantographs with overhead line power, with the remaining 20% covered by battery or a diesel generator. The new tribrid locomotive is designed to guarantee 100% energy independence over several work assignments and shifts. Thanks to the tribrid operation, diesel consumption is reduced by 85%.
Am 841 Conversion Project: Modernization for Construction Site Operation

In this video from “Eisenbahn in Ö, D, CH”, we show the planned conversion of several SBB Am 841 locomotives. Together with our partner Müller Technologie AG from Frauenfeld, we are modernizing the former shunting locomotives specifically for use in construction site operations.
The vehicles are equipped with, among other things, a battery storage, pantograph and other forward-looking components. You can find out exactly what is planned, how the conversion will take place and what investments are behind it all in the video.
